Your teaching experience, testimonials from students/parents, teaching methods adopted, etc. Example: I have 5 years of tutoring experience, currently doing relief teaching in XYZ primary school. I am able to adopt different teaching methods based on the needs of my students. I am currently teaching a Secondary 4 student. Her grades improved from a B3 to A2 after 2 months of tutoring.
Started tutoring from: 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025
My experience as follows: 1. Kumon Marker (From Apr 2014 to Current) • Responsible for marking Mathematics and English and Chinese scripts of children from K1, K2 to Primary 2 school children. • Teaching K1 to Primary 2 Mathematics, English and Chinese to the children attending the Kumon centre. Achievements: Able to notice and think of innovate ways to teach different needs’ of children and feedback their strengths and weaknesses to the main instructor. 2. Coaching my own child – P1 and P2 (Mathematics, English and Chinese) (From Jan 2014 to Current) • My girl’s learning style is– Kinesthetic Visual learning style. She has a short attention span and could not sit down to do work for long. So, I have to tailor my teaching methods according to her needs – Short, Interesting and Fun. • For Mathematics: Devise own games and specialized tests and worksheets to focus on maximum digestion of materials. Short test to assess competency. • For English: She is weak especially in spelling and learning new words. I focus on her learning style– Kinesthetic Visual learning style and her strengths in recognizing patterns. I teach her special ways to recognize the patterns in words to aid her fast retention and absorption of new words and their spelling. • For Chinese: She is weak in reading and dislikes writing mandarin words and is weak in vocabulary. I focus on her strengths in patterns recognition and short attention span. Devise special ways to teach her how to recognize the meaning of mandarin characters which makes learning easier and interesting. In this way, she found interest in learning mandarin. . Achievements: Able to maintain child’s interests and to maximize absorption and retention of materials. 3. Part Time Tuition for Singapore Polytechnic Student in Polytechnic Engineering Mathematics (2013) • Damien was an ITE graduate whom advanced to Polytechnic studies and was unable to adapt to the lecturer’s teaching style. As he did not do Additional Mathematics in Secondary, he struggled with his Engineering Mathematics. His learning style is visual and he needed detailed workings and explanations to learn Mathematics concepts. He was also very shy and dare not ask his friends or lecturers or tutors. • By having more attention from me - the teacher, which means a lot easier for him to approach me, to clarify any doubts that he may have. I was very patient with him and made him understand everything before I moved on to the next question or lesson. I will go through the topic before every class test and revise with him. • I gave him plenty of encouragement to spur him on. There were times where he lost hope and wanted to give up but I gave him endless support and encouragement. I showed concern about his overall performance in school and his well-being. I would believe that we have built a good rapport over the many sessions I have conducted for him. Depending on his weaknesses and strengths, tests were given once in a while to test his understanding of the concepts taught. • My greatest asset is that I am able to connect at the level of the student. I am able to identify individual students’ weaknesses and adapt my teaching strategy to maximize learning. I found that with my strategy, he was able to grasp key concepts with ease and with constant practice, soon he was able to solve more difficult questions. He made steady improvement and also found interest in Mathematics. He managed to pass his Mathematics test and also get a Grade “C” for examinations for the FIRST TIME in POLYTECHIC.. • I frequently updates his parents on their son’s performance and attitude towards learning and ways to help him. • I often reflect after each lesson on my teaching methods and reassess them so as to make my instructions more effective for each lesson I teach. I also solicit feedback from him so that I can better improve on my teaching methods. Achievements: Student who failed tests before, passed tests and examination with grade “C”. 4. Coaching husband for Polytechnic Engineering Mathematics and his classmate (From Apr 2007 to Mar 2012) My Husband – Lau Teck Kwang : • My husband is an ITE graduate that subsequently decided to do a part time Engineering diploma when he was 41 years old. He did not complete his secondary education hence, had no foundation in Secondary Mathematics. • I found that his learning style is visual and he needs plenty of examples with detailed steps to explain the Mathematics concepts. So, I tailored according to his learning needs. • Before he started his course, I spent 3 months every weekend, teaching him and showing him lots of examples on Secondary School Additional Mathematics to build his foundation. • When Polytechnic school term started, I focus on teaching him his school work with plenty of examples and exercises to master each topic. My topic by topic lessons during beginning lessons useful and helped to build a solid foundation which was critical for the second and third year Mathematics. • As he mastered the topics, he improved and became more confident. We will do drilling of the many past year tests and examinations papers to help him master and gain speed so that he could complete the paper within the stipulated time. • In the end, he graduated with a Merit in Mechanical Engineering with a cumulative GPA of 3.97 out of 4. His Polytechnic Engineering Classmate – Luqman Hakiem Bin Sarry • Luqman is an “O” level graduate that was weak in Secondary Mathematics foundation. My husband knew him when they were classmates in the Polytechnic doing the same course. • His learning style is Auditory. To teach him, I have to be very patient with him because of his weak foundation in Mathematics. I will explain concepts and clear his doubts slowly and clearly until he could understand. To help him gain confidence in mathematics. I always answered his questions patiently until he was aware of his mistakes. I put in a lot of effort going through topic by topic with him. Slowly, his results started to improve and I was able to see a big improvement in his confidence. I push him further to excel as. I believe that every student the potential to do well no matter how weak they once were. • At the end of his Polytechnic, he graduated in Mechanical Engineering with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 out of 4. Achievements: Able to teach an adult learners from ITE and O levels without the necessary foundations in Secondary Mathematics to excel in Singapore Polytechnic Mechanical Engineering Part Time Engineering Mathematics. 5. Coaching niece –Lim Yu Han - Secondary 2 Mathematics (2010) • My niece was a girl that lacked motivation and often slept in class during Mathematics lessons. She had short attention span but was a fast learner. I had to personally coach her. I really went out of the way to help her out of a true passion to teach and love for her and to help her build some skills and confidence in mathematics so that she can reach her potential. . • Her learning style is visual. I tailored my teaching according to her learning style – Visual and short attention span. I made the lesson short and each topic- simple to grasp. I used plenty of examples and questions to teach her and short tests to assess her competency. I have to put in extra time and effort to make sure she understand everything clearly. • I think that really helped her. This had given her a sense of renewed confidence that that she can do well in the subject. I had helped her realize that with practice, mathematics is not a difficult subject to conquer. I saw a change in attitude and a passion to want to do better. Achievements: Passed secondary two Mathematics examinations.
