Experience

My name is Aisha Jaafar and I recently graduated from the National University of Singapore with a BSc in Economics (2nd Upper Class Honors).
Before entering university in August 2010, I worked at the Anglo-Chinese School (Junior) as a substitute teacher for 7 months. I started as a day-to-day relief teacher. Shortly after, I was selected for longer term contracts including a 3 month contract as the form teacher of a Primary 1 class of 31 boys. The experience made me realize how much I really enjoy teaching and inspiring my students to learn. Although it was a daunting task initially, I was mentored by excellent senior teachers who offered the best training. I learned how to be firm with my students while still ensuring that they enjoy being in class. I gave voluntary after-class tutoring to my weaker students as I was determined to help them improve. In the end, my class achieved the best academic results amongst all Primary 1 classes, right before I left (to enter university). I was especially proud of my weaker students who showed a lot of improvement. After I left, I was contacted by a few parents who asked if I could offer private tuition to their sons.
I continued teaching at ACS (J) during university breaks until October 2014. My 5 year experience at ACS (J) has taught me how to deal with different types of pupils. I have also attained important teaching skills to bring out the best in my pupils academically.
Besides teaching at ACS (J), I have also worked with MENDAKI ROPE and MENDAKI SENSE over the past 2 years. In August 2014, 5 weeks prior to the PSLE, I was requested by MENDAKI to teach 3 Primary 6 students who had been failing Mathematics with U grades. My task was to ensure that I did whatever I could to help them pass PSLE Mathematics. Accepting the challenge, I wasted no time and actively sourced out suitable materials for them. I also designed my own work and intensive lesson plans, suited to their needs after studying their performance through their past papers. Motivation was also key and by believing in my students' abilities, I gave them the confidence they needed. I also conducted voluntary lessons after formal lesson time as I found it necessary. Eventually, all my pupils passed and I felt the sense of satisfaction that only a teacher would understand.
This year, I was contacted by MENDAKI again to teach 2 Primary 6 classes and a Secondary 3 class. All classes had around 6-10 students and I taught English and Mathematics for all. Again, I designed my own lesson plans, tailored to the needs of my students. Although, my students were initially quite weak and unmotivated, they showed significant improvement and interest over the months. I believe that I have done my best to prepare them for their examinations and future.
I have also given private home tuition for 3 years from 2010-2012. I taught students from Primary 1to Secondary 4 subjects including English, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, General Science, Chemistry, Physics, History and Geography. My students showed vast improvements and parents continued to renew my contracts until I chose to stop tutoring due to university commitments.
My students are from Tampines area secondary schools, and CHIJ and TKGS girls.
